Chandeshwori



Banepa (Nepal Bhasa: भोंत) is a Municipality town located 26 km east of Kathmandu, Nepal above 4800ft , located approximately 1 km northeast of the town along the Rudramati River. It is believed to be built on 17th century. At the time of the 1991 Nepal census it had a population of 12537 and had 1956 households in it The main attraction of Banepa is the temple of Chandeshwori.Whose historical tample is in the outskirts of this town.Chandeshwori has been called by different name such as Jagajjanani, Bhagavati, Chndika, Kalika, Ugratara, Ekajati, Chamunda, Dumaju and Kumari.Though she been called kumari she is not the consort of Kumari but mighty goddess whose manifestation was for destruction of the mighy demon king,  Chandasur.                          
                Legend has it that Chandasur had got the boon from Lord Shiva that no masculine power  could  destroy him. Then fought and defeated even Indra, the king of Heaven. And he became the master of the earth, patal and Heaven. Therefore, the defeated deities went into Rakta Chandan jungle and prayed to Chandeshwori to save them from terrible demon. meanwhile, accompanied by the demon followers Chandasur arrived there and all the deities transformed themselves into different kinds of birds and fiew up, up sky. At time a demon foiiower pointed to tree and said that a very beautiful girl had disappeared there. Then Chandasur cut down the tree with the Khadga with one stroke, and from within the stump in a high temper Chandesvari came out in a great dazzling light. The demon wondered to see the enchanting beauty of Chandesvari. So he was not the wish to fight with her, though battles for him were like the child's play. The dessgoddess could not but made a sudden attack upon him. Then there began the long fighting between the demon and Devi. At last godess Chandesvari beheaded the demon and saved all the deities.
As Chandesvari devi killed demon Chandasur and save this world since that day she was known as Chandesvari. There is great believe of peolpe towards this goddess. It says that goddess will fulfill all the wises that one keep. One get everything what they wise if they worship the goddess from the in ere heart. As she is a girl she cant see pain of her child so she always keep her love to her child.    




     Chandeshwari is not only popular in banepa, but it is alo worshippe by the people of Kathnamdu Valley as one of its main guardian deities. Hindus know her as Chandeswari, the Mahayan Buddhists take her as one of the goddess of protection and call her Ekjati. Inside this temple are displayed terracotta inages which belong to the fourth or fifth century A.D. It is believed that ancient terracotta images of this kind are very rare in Nepal . The temple of chandeswari is one of the temples of the Nepalese pagoda tyle. This 3 storied temple has popular tantrik figures an poses on the temple struts. There is a picture of Bhairab on the western wall of the temple which is considered to be one of the largest wall painting in Kathmandu Valley. At the front courtyard of chandeswari temple, the ancient shivalinga of chandeswari and sikhara style temple are not to be missed. Other than this the images of Ganesh and the other gods and goddess which are scattered here and there are also very attractive.
